In Conakry, leader of the Guinean military council Mamady Doumbouya was elected president of the country with an overwhelming 86.72% in the first round. The elections were a foregone conclusion due to the absence of key opposition figures. This was announced by the National Electoral Directorate on Tuesday. In second place with 6.59% of the vote was Abdoulaye Yero, leader of the Guinean Democratic Front (FRONDEG). According to the head of the electoral commission, turnout was 80.95%. After four years of the coup that brought him to power and despite his promise to hand it over to civilians, Doumbouya is consolidating his absolute control over this West African country amid a decline in freedoms.
